Highlighting its nationally recognized patient safety and quality achievements, Hartford Hospital has been named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group. Announced today, the Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. Hartford Hospital is the only hospital in Connecticut to be recognized as a Top Teaching Hospital by Leapfrog, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers recognized as the toughest standard-setters for healthcare safety and quality.

More than 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award. Among those, Hartford Hospital was one of only 72 nationwide to receive a Top Teaching award. A total of 149 top hospitals nationwide were selected as Top Hospitals, including:

• 8 Top Children’s

• 46 Top General

• 23 Top Rural

• 72 Top Teaching

“We are honored to be recognized by Leapfrog for Hartford Hospital’s excellence in patient quality and safety as well as for our deep commitment to training the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said Hartford Hospital President Bimal Patel. “Receiving this award is a testament to our staff’s hard work, skill, and dedication. It’s especially impressive to achieve yet another national recognition during these difficult times and amid the challenges of the pandemic.”

The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication and other errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“We are pleased to recognize Hartford Hospital as a Top Hospital this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Even with the continued strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hartford Hospital has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to excellent healthcare in the Hartford community. We congratulate the board, leadership, staff, and clinicians who put their patients first.”

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest quality and patient safety standards.

Hartford Hospital received an “A” grade for safety from Leapfrog earlier this year. The hospital is one of only eight hospitals in the state to receive an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for the fall of 2021, joining Hartford HealthCare hospitals Backus, Charlotte Hungerford, and The Hospital of Central Connecticut on the list.
