BERLIN, Conn. (March 25, 2021) – Eversource is proud to announce its partnership with Capital Community College (CCC) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Unions 420 and 457 to offer a certification program that will help prepare the next generation of electrical lineworkers in Connecticut. The Lineworker Certificate Program provides students valuable training in the electric utility industry and the opportunity to progress into Eversource’s paid apprenticeship program.

“Having a well-trained workforce is crucial to maintaining a safe and reliable electric system and delivering top-tier service for our customers,” said Eversource Vice President of Electric Field Operations in Connecticut Don Boudreau. “There continues to be a need for qualified workers in the electric operations industry and we’re committed to addressing that shortfall. We’re proud to partner with Capital Community College to cultivate a new generation of highly skilled lineworkers – who will have solid employment opportunities after completing the program.”

The 11-week certification program includes virtual classroom learning and hands-on training at the Eversource outdoor training complex in Berlin while operating under the energy company’s COVID-19 pandemic plan. Students will complete extensive course work, including electrical theory, basic math, communications, CPR, and safety. Courses will prepare students for employment in a variety of electrical fields, with an emphasis on electrical line worker responsibilities and tasks.

“Capital is thrilled about this new partnership with Eversource,” said Capital CEO Dr. G. Duncan Harris. “We are committed to providing all of our students access to a wide range of educational and training opportunities that will prepare them for well-paying, in-demand jobs and Eversource’s Lineworker Certificate Program aligns perfectly with that mission.”

“I’m grateful to Eversource for developing an electric utility line worker support program at Capital Community College in Hartford,” said state Senator John Fonfara (D-Hartford). “This program will provide an opportunity for young men and women from underserved communities, in particular, to learn the dynamic skill set required for a career in the electric utility industry.”

“This is a great program that provides the access needed to pursue a career in the electric operations field,” said state Senator Doug McCrory (D-Hartford). “I’m glad the program is happening right here in the capital city and will help pave the way for men and women in our communities to find good-paying jobs.”

The Eversource Foundation is providing scholarships to eligible students to help cover the $2,400 program fee and the cost of the required fire-retardant clothing and electric utility approved work boots. Specialized payment arrangements are also available for those in need.

The application deadline for the program is March 31. Eversource and Capital Community College will be hosting a virtual information session to offer prospective students more information about the certificate program. The session is scheduled for March 25 at 5 p.m. Click here to register.
