The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute announces the addition of neuro-oncologist Alexis Demopoulos, MD, whose areas of interest are cancer’s effects on the nervous system, including benign and malignant brain tumors.

Dr. Demopoulos, who sees patients in Hartford and Bridgeport, cares for patients suffering from brain tumors such as glioblastoma, oligodendroglioma, meningioma, low grade gliomas; and those battling the spread of other cancers into the brain or suffering from neurological complications of cancer treatments, including autoimmune encephalitis.

Dr. Demopoulos is the primary investigator on TRIDENT, a study into the use of radiation therapy and medication to treat newly diagnosed glioblastomas. He is an active collaborative researcher on projects investigating the connection between DNA in aging and malignancy, and radiosurgery with chemoradiation as treatment for malignant gliomas.

He comes to Hartford HealthCare from Northwell Health System in New York, where he spearheaded the multi-institutional brain tumor program as director of the Division of Neuro-Oncology in the Department of Neurology. He also served as an assistant professor of neurology at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University. Prior to that, he served in the same position for the departments of medicine, neurosurgery and neurology at Mount Sinai Hospital, also in Manhattan.

He is a graduate of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, completed a residency in neurology at Weill Cornell, New York Presbyterian Hospital, and then spent three years of clinical and research fellowships in neuro-oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before being hired on staff there.

Board-certified in neurology and neuro-oncology, Dr. Demopoulos is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Society for Neuro-Oncology and the American Society for Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Demopoulos is seeing patients at 85 Retreat Ave., Hartford, and 2800 Main St., Bridgeport. For appointments at either location, call 860.696.5169.
