The University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business has launched a new sports management program this fall as an undergraduate major, minor, and post-baccalaureate certificate.

Offered through the Department of Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship, the in-demand program aligns with the Barney School’s mission and vision by providing students with a career-ready progression in the sports management field. In addition to analytical, managerial, and hands-on skills, students will gain vast knowledge of sports economic trends and risk mitigation, as well as the legal and financial frameworks and marketing specifics of the sports industry.

“We are very excited to offer this new sports management program. In talking with prospective and current students, they have shared their desire to enter the broadening field of sports. This program will clearly transform the passion of many individuals into a rewarding career,” says Stephen Mulready, dean of the Barney School of Business.

This unique course of study offers a variety of sports-related electives within other colleges of the University — meaning students can tailor their academic experience to their specific interests through interdisciplinary elective courses, as well as experiential projects and internships. The Barney School of Business will leverage existing relationships with local sports businesses such as ESPN and the Hartford Yard Goats, providing students with a deep understanding of the broad sports career opportunities that exist. Graduates will be prepared for careers in sports marketing, athletics administration, sales, event operations, facility management, community relations, social media and more.

The sports management track is launching at a time when the field is growing. According to UHart’s Institutional Effectiveness Office, a focused market review notes: “There is a likely 11 percent increase in potential jobs that BS Sports Management graduates could choose to apply for between 2018-2028. This growth is faster than CT’s average (average growth of CT jobs in various industries is 5 percent between 2018 and 2028).”

The post-baccalaureate certificate is a particular highlight of the program. Sports management is a field of interest for sports enthusiasts, along with individuals seeking careers in an expanding sports industry. A certificate will allow alumni and working professionals to gain knowledge of management and analytics, economics and finance, marketing, law and risk management to upskill or change jobs.
