Hartford-area families are invited to the “2022 Back to School Community Day” this Sunday, August 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., hosted by the Urban League of Greater Hartford Young Professionals (ULGHYP). The free outdoor event will take place, rain or shine, in the parking lot of the Urban League of Greater Hartford’s office at 140 Woodland St. (corner of Woodland St. and Sargeant St.) in Hartford, Conn. Free parking.

“This annual event helps families prepare their children for a productive, healthy school year by offering free school supplies and a variety of community and wellness resources, as they enjoy a variety of fun activities at the same time,” explains David Hopkins, President and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Hartford, whose programs and operations impact more than 3,000 individuals and their families every year in the areas of youth development, adult education, workforce development, housing, community health, and social justice.

The Back to School Community Day is organized by the dynamic Urban League of Greater Hartford Young Professionals (ULGHYP), an auxiliary group of the Urban League that supports the regional organization’s mission to reduce economic disparities in the region’s communities by convening volunteers, ages 21-40, and hosting events and activities to promote empowerment among young adults.

“Children must be on site to receive their collection of start-of-school supplies and everyone in the family is welcome,” says Luz Holmes, President of the Urban League of Greater Hartford’s Young Professionals. “Featured will be a live Deejay, Double Dutch demonstrations, hands-on painting with Posh Paint, free books from the Big Red Book Truck and United Way, and the distribution of fresh produce grown indoors in the Urban League of Greater Hartford’s indoor Aeroponic Garden.”

Donations of school supplies from companies and individuals are being collected through August 19 at the Urban League of Greater Hartford offices at 140 Woodland St. in Hartford, CT 06105. Several businesses have collection boxes in their workplaces to support this event. For information about how to donate, contact yp.president@ulgh.org or events@ulgh.org or call 860-527-0147, ext. 291.
