The Insurance Capital: Promoting the title

Nov 04, 2014

I take a lot of pride in promoting Connecticut as the Insurance Capital – a title authenticated again and again by data and the extraordinary expertise that we have here in Connecticut.  Chances are there is a friend, neighbor or family member who is currently part of the over 100,000 employed by Connecticut’s insurance and financial services industry.  According to the 2013 Connecticut Insurance Market Brief, we have the highest number of insurance jobs per capita in the U.S. and we rank #1 in the concentration of actuaries in the nation.  Our highly talented and educated workforce, including those employed as auditors, underwriters, business analysts, risk managers and accountants cannot be duplicated anywhere in the world.

We need Connecticut residents to promote the title of Insurance Capital.  As ambassadors, we can reinforce our global position, one that is envied by many states, and hold the flag high enough for businesses around the world to take note of who we are.

As cyber security, catastrophic weather, political unrest and global health issues dominate our daily lives, Connecticut’s insurance companies are driving the technological advancements and innovation to help us live longer, safer and healthier lives.  In keeping pace, the industry is moving faster towards bits and bytes, not bricks and mortar.  Emerging markets are fostering innovation and new consumerism.   The demand for data scientists and chief customer experience officers are now the norm for most global companies.  Sophisticated energy and climate risk solutions are shaping the world’s sustainable future.

On November 20th, the brightest minds and leaders in insurance practice converge in Hartford at the annual Insurance Market Forecast where the intersection of science, technology, innovation and insurance practice are explored right here in our capitol city, Hartford.   The future of the insurance industry is a global practice but here in Hartford, we touch it every day.  Wear the banner proudly, Connecticut, as we are the Insurance Capital.

Susan Winkler is the Executive Director of the Connecticut Insurance & Financial Services Cluster [CT IFS], an initiative of the MetroHartford Alliance representing the interests of insurance and financial services companies statewide.

The 2014 Connecticut Insurance Market Forecast will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. at the Connecticut Convention Center at 100 Columbus Boulevard in Hartford, Connecticut.   Registration and the referenced 2013 Insurance Market Brief can be found at www.connecticutifs.com.
