How do local sports events impact Hartford’s economy? In a big way! As MetroHartford Alliance President and CEO David Griggs said, “The annual Travelers Championship professional golf tournament is a major economic and marketing asset for our region.”
Griggs teed up the latest Alliance Breakfast, “A Conversation with Bubba Watson Moderated by Chris Berman” by introducing Andy Bessette, Travelers Executive Vice President and Chair of the MetroHartford Alliance Board of Directors.
“Travelers Championship is Connecticut’s event,” said Bessette. He emphasized that, not only does the annual event create economic impact in the region, “it also serves charities, serves community, and benefits local businesses.” He added, “The reason we do this is charity—global and regional.”
Renowned sportscaster Chris Berman noted that for the last two years, professional golfers voted the Travelers Championship as the best tournament, drawing on the event’s charitable giving, sponsorship, and community support.
Multiple major champion professional golfer Bubba Watson concurs, “You just can’t ask for a better golf tournament. Being here feels like home—my family loves it and we wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He added, “The history of sports in New England is overwhelming. I just love this area.”
Watson spoke passionately about his connection to Connecticut and the importance of giving back. At the end of last year’s Travelers Championship, he donated $200K to Hole In the Wall Gang Camp.
“Golf has brought me to a point where I can be a better person,” said Watson. “It gives me a platform to make an impact.”
Berman wrapped up the conversation assuring Watson, “Connecticut is here for you.”
Hartford Has Sports
With home teams including the Connecticut Sun, Hartford Athletic, Hartford Wolfpack, and Hartford Yard Goats, and numerous events from hosting the NCAA tournament in April to the upcoming Travelers Championship June 20 – 23, Hartford puts major sports on the map.
Griggs encouraged attendees to get out there and enjoy local sporting events to support Hartford’s economy and benefit local charities.
