Gallery on the Green presents “The New Normal”

The Gallery on the Green is pleased to continue our season with a members’ themed exhibit entitled, “The New Normal,” plus a solo show by Nancy Greco.  These shows will be on exhibit from Friday, September 4th through Sunday, October 4th.  Visit an historic gallery and view newly created fine art from the artist guilds’ 100+ members.  The shows provide an array of stunning work from paintings, drawings, graphic arts, and sculpture to ceramics, fiber/beadwork, and photography. The gallery is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.  

Nancy Greco’s solo show “Reflections” explores what it is that makes one object or thought more memorable or important than another and what makes something seem lasting rather than fleeting. The dream and symbolic imagery in her drawings is an attempt to open a dialogue with viewers, to encourage them to reflect upon their own memories and connections regarding the changeable way we evaluate what we look at or experience both present and past.Greco went to Southern Connecticut State University and Wesleyan University and has an M.F.A. from Ohio State University.  She received a Ford Foundation Grant, an Individual Artist’s Grant, and a Visiting Artist’s Grant for Lithography Workshops for educators and students from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. Early awards include the First Award in the Pratt Graphics 6th International Miniature Print Exhibition in NYC and a First Place in The Connecticut Women Artists Open Juried Exhibition. In late 2017 she received an Individual Artist’s Grant from the Artist’s Resource Trust of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. Last year, Greco was awarded The Maxwell Shepherd Prize at Gallery on the Green.Greco’s solo exhibitions include Martin Sumers Gallery in New York City and the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, Connecticut. In 2018, Trustman Art Gallery at Simmons University was the venue for a solo show “Recurrence” that traced the appearance and transformation of symbolic imagery through nearly five decades of Greco’s prints and drawings.The Gallery on the Green will be following the State of Connecticut’s COVID-19 reopening guidelines.  All visitors inside the gallery are required to wear a mask and observe social distancing protocol. Given the circumstances, the above protocol may change in accordance with CT State guidelines.  There will be no opening reception.The Gallery on the Green, established in 1960, is the longest continuously operating artists’ guild in Connecticut.  It is housed in a schoolhouse (circa 1872).  There are three spacious galleries and an outdoor sculpture garden. The gallery is located near the intersection of Dowd Avenue and Route 44 at 5 Canton Green Road in Canton.  Hours are Friday – Sunday, 1-5 pm. "A Vote of Her Own: The Long Fight for Woman Suffrage" at the Connecticut Historical Society Museum and Library

One hundred years ago, women secured the right to vote with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The struggle for “woman suffrage” lasted more than 70 years and was fought by women and men on both sides of the contest. This exhibit features original photographs, documents, and artifacts representing Connecticut individuals and organizations who argued, reasoned, marched, and took action for or against women’s right to vote. Free with regular museum admission.

"Thank You, Our Heroes,” an appreciation for our Frontline Workers Corn Maze at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, CT

Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday 1:00 until 6:00 p.m.  $10 entry fee

The iconic Statue of Liberty, a symbol that unites all Americans, is adorned with a giant Heart, the symbol that universally stands for our show of thanks and appreciation for our Frontline Workers during this COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.  You will learn about nurses, medical professionals, EMT’s, fire fighters, charitable organizations, and more.  The Corn Maze is 4 acres, and there is a total of one mile of paths and hundreds of decision points.  There are 10 positions in the Maze which coincide with 10 multiple choice questions on a passport that guides the visitors—if you answer correctly you go the right way, if you answer incorrectly you get lost!.  The passports have multiple themes—you can choose the subject that most interests you.  We staff the Maze with Maze Monitors who are there to assist as needed.  The average time needed to navigate the entire Maze is 30-40 minutes.  The Maze is interactive, engaging and fun for all ages.Donations  This is our 21^st Corn Maze.  Since 2000, we have donated $1 of every ticket sold to the American Cancer Society.  The accumulative total coming into this year is $623,315.  In addition, this will be the first year that we will donate fifty cents of every ticket sold to the Connecticut Cancer Foundation.2020 Corn Maze ProceduresEnsuring the health and safety of our customers and employees is at the forefront of our 2020 Corn Maze procedures.  We understand that we are implementing many changes, and we ask for your understanding and cooperation.  Most importantly, we thank you for your patronage!

• If you are sick or not feeling well, please stay home and don’t come to the farm, PYO or the Maze.
• You are required to wear a face mask if you are not able to maintain a safe social distance, which is a minimum of 6’ between you and others outside your group—please bring your own mask.  This means wearing a mask at the booth/entrance and exit area.  You may remove your mask while in the Maze as long as you can maintain safe social distancing.  Children 2 years old and younger are not required to wear masks.
• Our employees and volunteers will wear masks at all times.
• Social distancing will be maintained, 6’ between individuals
• We will have enhanced sanitation practices, regularly cleaning and sanitizing high touch points
• You are requested to wash and/or sanitize your hands regularly and as needed--we’ll have plenty of sanitizer available
• Groups or parties will be limited to no more than 4 so as to maintain safe social distancing in the Maze.  The exception is there is no limit for immediate family members.
• Maze Monitors will be in the Maze to assist in keeping guests from congregating and to maintain safe social distancing.
• The number of guests in the Maze will be limited at any given time to allow for safe social distancing.  We will do this by staggering the entering into the Maze.
• These limits may lead to wait times especially during busier times and or on weekends.
• We encourage you to come during the weekday, or earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon on weekend days.
• Picnicking activity is allowed in designated areas around the Apple Barrel Market, but will not be allowed in the Orchard or in the Maze area.
• Animals/Pets will not be allowed on the farm, in the Orchard, or in the Maze.  Service dogs are allowed.

Historic Festival 38 at Lime Rock Park

Enjoy vintage car racing at its best. Now in its 38th year, the Historic Festival at Lime Rock Park opens on Thursday with the Vintage Race Car & Sports Car Parade in the afternoon. This 17-mile tour through the local towns culminates in a free street fair in the charming town of Falls Village.

Then, continue your nostalgic journey through time and enjoy three days of authentic vintage car racing with practice and qualifying on Friday and a full day of competition on Saturday and Labor Day Monday.On Friday, Saturday and Monday, the Festival is an opportunity for families to find a grassy spot on one of the various viewing areas and enjoy the excitement on the track. Grab a sandwich from the concession stands or pack a picnic. We have wide-open spaces and spectator hillsides, no grandstands, no bleachers.Of the Festival's highlights, the Sunday in the Park Concours d’Elegance and Gathering of the Marques allows spectators the opportunity to stroll the track while admiring the cars.  $50, children (16 and under) Military/Active/Retired/Veteran free.

Wadsworth Atheneum Reopens with Labor Day Tours

Saturday, September 5 through Monday, September 7, 2020  12:00 to 5:00 p.m. The museum will be closed from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. for cleaning.

The Wadsworth will be re-opening on Saturday, September 5 at limited capacity with timed entry. This allows us time for enhanced cleaning and contact tracing procedures. Bring a friend and explore art together. Admission is free to all through November 15, 2020. Timed tickets and tour registration are now available for Labor Day weekend.

• Masks or facial coverings are required unless written documentation is provided from a licensed medical provider or government agency showing that a guest qualifies for an exemption. For these individuals, a clear face shield will be allowed as an acceptable alternative to a face mask.

• A contactless temperature check is required to enter the museum.

• Observe the floor markings and posted room capacity advisories to ensure safe social distancing. Hand sanitizer stations can be found throughout the museum.

• Visitors are encouraged to bring a smartphone or connected device to access audio tours, digital versions of the museum map, and interpretive materials in the galleries. Free WiFi is available.

• The library, food service, theater, and Austin House will be closed to the public. The Museum Shop is online only at this time.

• Coat check and bag storage will not be available and visitors are advised that backpacks, food, and drink are not permitted in the galleries.
