Team Movid Wins First Place at Startup Weekend Hartford

Hartford, Conn. (October 5, 2012) --  The MetroHartford Alliance and its young professionals organization, HYPE, recently hosted Startup Weekend Hartford, which challenged teams to harness their entrepreneurial spirit and develop concepts for startup companies in the health and wellness industry.  The weekend-long event, which convened 62 students, business and medical professionals, and budding entrepreneurs at the Hartford Public Library, was Hartford’s Second Annual and only the second Startup Weekend in the world to focus on the health and wellness sector.

“We received an overwhelmingly positive response to this year’s Startup Weekend and saw a number of creative and viable ideas come to life during the 54-hour competition,” said John Shemo, vice president and director of economic development for the MetroHartford Alliance.

Awards for first place, second place and People's Choice, as well as reSET's Social Enterprise Award - presented by The Walker Group's Chief Executive Officer, Kate Emery - were given.  The winners of Startup Weekend 2012 are:

First Place and People's Choice – Movid, John Farrell (Hartford)

Second Place – eGency, Deepak Vokaliga (Westborough, MA)

reSET Social Enterprise - Farmer's Garden, Maureen Farmer (New Britain)

A follow-up event will take place at the Hartford Public Library on October 10 at 6:00 p.m. Attendees will debrief, review a post-event survey and discuss their efforts to move their business plans forward.
