Hartford, Conn. (February 8, 2016)
– Aiming to improve Connecticut’s business climate and increase private-sector investment, nine influential organizations today announced a coordinated effort to drive economic and employment growth. The Bridgeport Regional Business Council, The Business Council of Fairfield County, Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce, Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut, Inc., Connecticut Business & Industry Association, Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, MetroHartford Alliance, Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, and Waterbury Regional Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to propose a set of key initiatives to be adopted in the upcoming legislative session.
Recognizing that the health care, insurance and financial services, manufacturing, science and technology, tourism and higher education sectors combine to create the foundations for growth in Connecticut, these organizations are calling for three broad strategic commitments from the General Assembly, including:
• Engaging the private sector to driving sustainable economic growth, infrastructure investment and human capital development;
• Taking immediate innovative steps to more efficiently deliver public health, safety and social services to residents; and
• Creating a bipartisan environment of fiscal responsibility and sustainable public services.
Specific actions supporting each strategic area have been developed by the coalition and are being presented to legislative leaders.
“Like every state, we face challenges including global economic competition, growing public sector debt, and accelerating technological and demographic change. At the same time, we have an exceptional economic foundation that can be fully leveraged through more structured and sustained collaboration between the leaders of the private sector and State government,” said Oz Griebel, president and CEO, MetroHartford Alliance. Griebel cited the efforts of Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy to attract jobs and address the State’s structure and fiscal challenges. “By focusing on economic growth and spending discipline, we will reignite the private sector confidence that drives the job growth and capital investment for today and generations to come.”
These organizations also emphasize that they will coordinate their legislative and electoral advocacy throughout the upcoming legislative session and the 2016 November elections.
