Griggs Brings Economic Development Leadership to Organization, City and Region
February 15, 2018 (Hartford, CT) – The MetroHartford Alliance announced David Griggs, CEcD, EDFP, as its new President and CEO, effective March 12. Mr. Griggs succeeds Oz Griebel, who stepped down as President and CEO at the end of 2017 after 16 years of service and leadership, and Nancy Wheeler, who is serving as Interim President and CEO. Ms. Wheeler will reassume her role as Senior Vice President.
Most recently, Mr. Griggs served as Vice President, Business Investment and Research at the Greater Minneapolis St. Paul (MSP) Regional Economic Development Partnership, a private-public nonprofit organization accelerating job growth and capital investment in 16 counties. Mr. Griggs led business outreach as well as the research efforts of the organization and commissioned several studies highlighting the business and talent assets of the MSP region with the purpose of attracting and retaining jobs and investment. During his tenure the organization worked on projects that created over 25,000 jobs while investing over $3.2B. His team also provided instrumental research support for winning the 2018 Super Bowl bid.
Mr. Griggs also served eight years with Buffalo Niagara Enterprise (Buffalo, NY), the last four as Business Development Director, where he worked closely with site selectors, corporate and commercial real estate partners and other key professional advisors to build the regional economy while retaining existing companies and recruiting new ones. His leadership resulted in thousands of jobs created and billions of dollars invested by such companies as Yahoo!, Definity Health/United Health Group and GEICO. Prior to that, Mr. Griggs worked in research and planning at the Orleans County (N.Y.) Planning Department and for the City of Niagara Falls.
“David is nationally known for his accomplishments in attracting and retaining tens of thousands of jobs in Minnesota and New York, and his keen sense of research and data will allow us to promote the Greater Hartford Region as an exceptional place to live and do business,” said Andy Bessette, Chair, MetroHartford Alliance, and Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer, Travelers. “David is a leader and collaborator, and he will form key partnerships not only in our state, but also nationally and internationally. We’re thrilled to have someone with his skill sets leading the Alliance.”
“I have been fortunate to work with leaders and residents in many communities to ensure economic success and business growth and development through a collaborative and unified effort,” said Mr. Griggs. “I am honored to lead the MetroHartford Alliance as a top performing economic partnership that works to grow the Greater Hartford regional economy. We have all of the assets in place to make Greater Hartford one of the most economically viable markets in the country and I look forward to working with our community and prospective private-sector employers to ensure long-term economic growth and tell our story locally, nationally and internationally.”
