Connecticut’s aerospace sector boasts some of the state’s fastest-growing companies, and the world is about to find out why. Eight of those companies will comprise the Connecticut delegation to the Farnborough International Airshow July 16-22 in England.
They’ll show off their products and capabilities in a pavilion sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology and the Connecticut Economic Resource Center.
This year’s roster includes
· Aero Gear, Windsor, which designs, engineers and manufactures gears and gearbox assemblies;
· Arcor Laser Services, Suffield, which provides drilling, marking, welding and cutting services;
· Connecticut Coining, Bethel, which makes housings, shields, rings and other parts for aerospace contractors;
· EDAC Technologies, Cheshire, which makes precision components for original-equipment manufacturers and maintenance-repair-overhaul services;
· New England Airfoil Products / Pietro Rosa TBM, Farmington, which makes parts and components for gas-turbine engines;
· PCX Aerostructures, Newington, which makes large structural airframe assemblies including wing, fuselage and engine components;
· Swift Textile Metalizing, Bloomfield, which develops and produces electrically-conductive and reflective metalized fabrics; and
· Whitcraft Group, Eastford, which makes sheet-metal assemblies and precision-machined components.
Being part of the Connecticut pavilion affords these companies face-to-face access to customers and potential customers they most likely could not afford on their own.
“It’s extremely helpful for a small business like Swift Textile Metalizing,” said STM President Steve Sigmon.
“In all likelihood we would not have started participating the airshow if not for the help the state provides to offset to the cost of participating,” says Whitcraft CEO Colin Cooper. “The show also provides us a certain gravitas as a participant in the world’s largest aerospace marketplace.”
“Farnborough gives us far-reaching exposure to other companies around the world,” says Don Christensen, Arcor vice president, business development.
“Being on the State of Connecticut pavilion is a big plus point,” says Clive Cunliffe of New England Airfoil Products. “The pavilion automatically draws attention because Connecticut is known for aerospace.”
And the exposure pays off – in fact, it’s led to more than $461 million in sales for companies in the Connecticut pavilions at the semi-annual Farnborough and Paris airshows.
In addition to co-sponsoring the pavilion, DECD helps companies apply for and obtain grants from the State Trade and Expansion Program, which defray some of the costs of building their exporting businesses.
This year’s Farnborough International Airshow will feature more than 1,500 exhibitors from 52 countries and draw more than 200,000 visitors.
