The Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford Names President & CEO, Launches New Events

Howard SovronskyDecember 31, 2014, West Hartford, CT - The Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford is pleased to announce that Howard Sovronsky has been named the next President & CEO by the board, effective January 1, 2015. In his new role, Sovronsky will oversee the strategic initiatives and day-to-day operation of the Federation’s six main divisions, including campaign development, finance, planning and allocations, public affairs and social justice, Jewish education and leadership and marketing and communications.

Since July, 2014, Sovronsky had been serving as Interim President & CEO of the Federation, leading the staff and furthering the work of the nonprofit organization and its partners in 30 towns in Greater Hartford, in Israel and in 70 Jewish communities around the world.  He will continue Federation’s collaborative relationship with the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford and the Aim Chai Endowment Campaign, as well as with area synagogues.

“Over the past six months, Howard’s leadership and nonprofit management expertise has been of great value to the board, community trustees and to our partners,” said Robert K.Yass, Chair of the Federation Board. “This is an exciting time for us as we move forward with a new leader whose vision and enthusiasm will help transform the Federation into a more vibrant, relevant and  powerful force for our Jewish community.”

Howard Sovronsky, a West Hartford resident, is a professional social worker who comes to Federation after holding a range of executive level positions in the non-profit, public and hospital sectors. After a successful career on Long Island where he served as Commissioner of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities for Nassau County and then as Vice President for Behavioral Health at the Nassau Health Care Corporation, he was recruited to work in Connecticut as the Chief Operating Officer for a large non-profit behavioral health and child welfare agency.

“I am honored to take on this role in such a generous and forward-thinking community,” said Sovronsky. “The Federation can lead efforts to transform this community by preparing a new generation of leaders, speaking up for Israel, advocating for those in need, ensuring that the education of our children remains one of our highest priorities and helping everyone in our community find a meaningful way of expressing their Jewish identity and religious beliefs”.

This summer Sovronsky traveled with the Jewish Federations of North America to Greece and Israel where he witnessed firsthand how the collective support of the American Jewish community directly impacts and strengthens the people of Israel and our global Jewish family. In Hartford, he has spoken at numerous leadership briefings about the complex issues facing Israel, and the critical needs in the Greater Hartford community in addressing the needs of the elderly, at-risk families and people living with disabilities.

“As we continue to grow and strengthen our Greater Hartford Jewish community, I encourage the emergence of a broad range of voices and visions that will foster innovation and creativity. Federation is a network comprised of many different organizations, institutions and programs with the capacity for creating significant and lasting positive change.”

Federation also invites you to attend its 2015 events, including a Lunch & Learn and an evening FedTalk on January 8 with Gil Tamary, Washington Bureau Chief for Israel’s Channel 10 News.
