Connecticut Science Center Elects New Trustees for 2017

The Connecticut Science Center is pleased to welcome three new trustees. Thomas M. Daugherty, Managing Partner of the KPMG Hartford Office; Gladis Kersaint, Ph.D., Dean of the Neag School of Education and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Connecticut; and Samir Mehta, President of Defense Systems and Services at Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, were elected to the Connecticut Science Center Board of Trustees March 30, 2017.

“Each new board member brings valuable talents and skills to the table,” said Tom Barnes, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Connecticut Science Center. “Tom, Gladis, and Sam all bring a great deal of knowledge from different fields that will offer a fresh perspective to our already strong Board. We are sure their passion and support will enhance the Science Center.”


Since the opening of the Connecticut Science Center in 2009, the Science Center has been able to serve over 2.5 million people through an immersive and educational experience.


“The addition of these talented individuals to the Board of Trustees will ensure success as we implement new exhibitions and programs and plan for the future,” said Connecticut Science Center President and CEO, Matt Fleury. “The Connecticut Science Center is grateful for the leadership of our Board of Trustees, and our team is excited to have the opportunity to work with them.”


About Thomas M. Daugherty

Thomas Daugherty has spent his 31-year career gaining extensive experience in property/casualty and life insurance organizations across the country and internationally with KPMG. From 2007 to 2015, serving as KPMG’s National Audit Industry Leader, Mr. Daugherty led several efforts focusing on client experience and resourcing for the sector. In his current positions as the global lead audit engagement partner with Aetna and the account executive for AFLAC, Mr. Daugherty has regular interaction with senior management, internal audit, and the audit committee. A graduate of KPMG’s Chairman’s 25, a program devoted to accelerating the development of the firm’s leaders, Mr. Daugherty is the KPMG Hartford Office Managing Partner.


About Gladis Kersaint, Ph.D.

Dr. Gladis Kersaint is the Dean of the Neag School of Education and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Connecticut. She is a well-respected scholar in mathematics education with an extensive service record. Prior to her current role, Dr. Kersaint worked with the University of South Florida serving as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Research for the College of Education as well as a Professor of Mathematics. During her tenure at the University of South Florida, Dr. Kersaint served as principal investigator of substantial grants from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, and Florida Department of Education. Dr. Kersaint has authored four books and numerous refereed journals articles related to effective mathematics teaching methods. Dr. Kersaint has led several collaborative STEM education projects involving a number of school district personnel as well as university faculty.


About Samir Mehta: 

Samir Mehta, President of Sikorsky Defense Systems and Services for Lockheed Martin Corporation, is responsible for the full life-cycle of Sikorsky’s military products and services. Mr. Mehta joined Sikorsky in 2000, providing legal support and guidance across a variety of initiatives and was appointed as Associate General Council in 2004. In the following years, Mr. Mehta served many roles within Sikorsky, from general management to President of Sikorsky’s Helicopter Support subsidiary; before becoming Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Sikorsky Aerospace Services. In his role as President of Sikorsky Military Systems, Mr. Mehta was responsible for all military products. Prior to joining Sikorsky, Mr. Mehta served as Assistant Counsel and Legal Specialist at Otis Elevator Company. Mr. Mehta is a graduate of Stonehill College and holds a Juris Doctorate Degree and a Master of Public Administration Degree from the University of Connecticut.
