The Hartford Marathon Foundation has expanded its commitment to charity fundraising at the 2017 Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon with a Charity 5K initiative. In addition to highlighting the 20 organizations that serve as Official Charities for the event, HMF is also encouraging participants to run, walk, volunteer or fundraise for a cause they support to add to more than $6.9 million raised through the event since 1994.
All participants in the October 14th Eversource Hartford Marathon, Half Marathon, Charity 5K and Team 26.2 relay are encouraged to run or walk for a cause. For more information, to set up a fundraising team or join a team, please visit the Charities page.

“This is a true community-centric event, providing the opportunity for participants to achieve their personal goals while giving back. The expansion of the Charity 5K helps us better serve runners and walkers of all abilities to support local charities and causes important to them,” said Beth Shluger, CEO of the Hartford Marathon Foundation and Eversource Hartford Marathon race director.
In addition to the growth of the charity program for participants, the Hartford Marathon Foundation also recognizes a longtime leader this year for his service to charity. David Polk has contributed 23 years of stewardship and generosity as a founding HMF Board member and will be honored with a Perpetual Award. Polk is currently the president and executive director of The First Tee of Connecticut and has also served as vice president of Hartford Hospital and president of Aetna Health Plans of Southern New England. Now an emeritus member of the board, Polk is applauded by the Hartford Marathon Foundation for his longtime service and support.
The Perpetual Award will be presented each year at the Hartford Marathon Finish Line Ceremony to the person who raises the most charity pledges. The winner will be recognized publicly and have their name inscribed on the perpetual trophy, and $500 will be donated by HMF to their charity.
“We’re grateful for the leadership and dedication of David Polk and proud to start this new Perpetual Award recognition in his honor,” said Shluger.
Registration is currently open for all race events. More information can be found at http://www.HartfordMarathon.com, on Facebook at HMF Events or via Twitter at @RunHMF.
