Leadership Greater Hartford Receives $5,000 Youth Leadership Grant from TD Charitable Foundation

Leadership Greater Hartford (LGH) received a $5,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, for its 2017 Common Ground youth leadership program.

Introducing young people to the real-world application of concepts like diversity, collaboration, conflict resolution, and leadership is energizing and empowering and so needed in today’s world. Common Ground brings high school students together from urban and suburban schools to provide a forum to exchange ideas, experiences — and laughs! In this age of being constantly “wired in,” the value of genuine interpersonal connections has never been more significant.

For three decades, thousands of Common Ground students have developed new skills and understanding. The shared experiences and interactive program curriculum provide a format to directly address challenging topics like stereotypes and “isms.” Participants directly apply their new leadership skills and personal growth experiences to planning and implementing a community-focused service project that they design and organize together.

For example, the 2016 Common Ground participants partnered with the Ugandan American Nakuwadde Mission Project, whose mission is to work with the people in Nakuwadde, a poor village in Uganda, to build a community center to house medical, educational, social, and entrepreneurial services. The students hosted a film viewing fundraiser showing Poverty, Inc., a film that examines the persistence of poverty in Africa and the surprisingly negative impact of some well-meaning aid. As a result of their efforts, these students raised more than $2,600 for the building of the Ugandan community center, in addition to receiving donations of food, beverages, and other supplies for the film viewing event.

This project benefited not only the mission project, but also had a tremendous impact on the students themselves. In fact, a Glastonbury high school student shared, "I loved getting to work on a community service project with my peers in the Common Ground program. People think teenagers aren't motivated to change the community — but look at us. Look what we have accomplished!"
