Robinson+Cole Lawyer Leads Effort to Equip Students with Tools to Help Them “B.E.E. The Best” This School Year

Robinson+Cole lawyer Alaine C. Doolan led the effort to donate 35 backpacks filled with school supplies to the Truancy Intervention Project of Connecticut, an organization that provides legal advocates to children with attendance issues in an effort to get them back on track and in class every day, and Interval House, Connecticut’s largest domestic violence intervention and prevention agency, as part of the B.E.E. The Best program.

Ms. Doolan, who founded B.E.E. The Best in 2011 after serving as a mentor with the Truancy Intervention Project of Connecticut, organizes the annual initiative in collaboration with R+C CARES, a group of employee volunteers that facilitates community service activities for the firm. The acronym, “B.E.E.”, stands for “Backpacks for Excellence in Education” and is reflective of the program’s mission to encourage excellence in education by alleviating poor school attendance as the result of not having supplies. B.E.E. the Best supports children in grades K through 8 with backpacks that contain pencils, notebooks, binders, planners, calculators, flash drives, and more. Over the last six years, approximately 200 backpacks have been donated.

The Truancy Intervention Project, a program of The Children’s Law Center, is an intervention to divert the filing of a Family with Service Need petition, which provides a basis for responding to the needs of children exhibiting unlawful behavior. The project assigns volunteer lawyers to mentor middle-school age children who are experiencing problems with school attendance. The goal is to provide students with an adult role model demonstrating consistent interest in the child’s school attendance.

Founded in 1977, Interval House has positively affected the lives of nearly 200,000 women and children who have experienced psychological and physical abuse at the hands of a domestic or intimate partner.
