The Ensworth Charitable Foundation Supports Hartford Public Library’s Lifelong Learning for Older Adults

The Ensworth Charitable Foundation awarded a grant in the amount of $15,000 to Hartford Public Library in support of its Lifelong Learning for Older Adults program. All classes are free and open to the public and specifically target the Hartford community over the age of 55.

Lifelong Learning for Older Adults: Classes in the Arts at Hartford Public Library engages participants in creative expression, developing artistic and critical thinking skills, and helps them discover their potential and productivity as they age. Classes provide hands-on creative arts workshops focusing on a variety of disciplines, including poetry, dance, photography, and creative writing and self-publishing, each taught by a professional teaching artist who is a master in that particular field.

This program is now in its third year of funding. The series of six workshops offered in 2016 and 2017 were a huge success. Each workshop series filled to capacity and had a waiting list. Classes will be offered downtown and at library branches.

The first series of classes will be “Faces & Places,” a collage workshop taught by local artist Andres Chaparro. Chaparro is a mixed media painter and collagist whose bold and expressive art captures the essence of jazz music. Classes will take place at the Albany Branch, 1250 Albany Ave., on Tuesdays from June 12 – July 17, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – noon. The workshop series will celebrate Hartford history and Hartford artists past and present, using reproductions of materials from the library’s Hartford History Center collection. All workshop supplies and materials will be provided. Classes are progressive and space is limited; registration is required. Contact Sarah Pelletier to register: or 860-695-6377. Additional times, dates and locations for upcoming workshops will be announced soon.

The Ensworth Charitable Foundation was established in 1948 to support and promote educational, cultural, human services, religious, and health, art and cultural programs care programming for underserved populations in Hartford and surrounding communities.

As a finalist for the 2013 and 2014 National Medal from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, Hartford Public Library has been recognized as national leader in redefining the urban public library in the 21st century as an innovative and stimulating place that provides free resources that inspire reading, guide learning, and encourage individual exploration.
