Greater Hartford Legal Aid (GHLA), an organization whose mission is to secure justice for and to protect the rights of the needy residents of Hartford County, has elected Robinson+Cole lawyer Edward J. Heath to president and chair of its board of directors. Mr. Heath is the chair of Robinson+Cole’s Business Litigation Group and leads its Government Enforcement and Corporate Compliance Teams.
For the last 20 years, Mr. Heath has helped businesses across the globe resolve their disputes. An experienced trial lawyer, he has pursued or defended numerous eight- and nine-figure cases, which includes obtaining a full defense jury verdict following a multi-month trial for an institutional client facing $100 million in contract and business tort claims. In addition, Mr. Heath routinely advises institutional clients in connection with civil and criminal government investigations and enforcement activities.
Mr. Heath also has a strong commitment to pro bono work. He chaired the firm’s Pro Bono Committee for seven years, during which time the firm as well as individual lawyers, including Mr. Heath, received more than a dozen awards or other forms of recognition for pro bono work. With regard to GHLA, Mr. Heath previously served as Vice President and has been a member of the board of directors for the last seven years.
For 60 years, GHLA has increased access to the courts, advocated for fairness in the application of law, and broken down barriers and improved systems while practicing preventive law. Robinson+Cole has been a GHLA partner since its inception in 1958. The firm’s managing partner, Stephen E. Goldman served as a GHLA board member from 1986 to 2002 and as Board President from 1997 to 2002. In addition, Robinson+Cole was a founding firm of the Greater Hartford Legal Aid Foundation (GHLAF), the funding arm of GHLA, in 1993. George Hastings, a partner in the firm, served as the inaugural President of the Foundation’s Board from May 1994 to June 1999, and remained active on the Board until August 2016, shortly before his passing. Today, both Mr. Goldman and Robinson+Cole lawyer Norman H. Roos, serve on the GHLAF Board of Directors.
