Bloomfield race to benefit athletes with disabilities gets continued support

On July 21, the 4th annual Achilles Connecticut Hope & Possibility® Run will kick off from the Metropolitan Learning Center in Bloomfield, produced again by Hartford Marathon Foundation.  Cigna returns as the Presenting Sponsor for the fourth consecutive year, with exclusive naming rights.

“We are excited to welcome Cigna back as Presenting Sponsor, and truly value the deep level of engagement between Cigna employees and Achilles athletes here in Connecticut,” said Erin Spaulding, Achilles Connecticut Chapter President.

“Cigna proudly supports Achilles nationally, and this event in our home town is something that our employees look forward to every year,” said Wendy Sherry, President of Cigna Connecticut and Cigna Payer Solutions. “Last year, I had the pleasure of guiding an Achilles athlete for the first time and look forward to doing it again this year. There is so much to be learned from these amazing athletes about courage, commitment, and determination. It is truly inspiring!”

The event offers a 5K and 10K race, HMF Fit Kids run and 1.5-mile fitness walk.  “There is something for everyone of all ages and abilities, including an Expo featuring businesses and organizations who support the disabled-and non-disabled- community,” said Spaulding.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Achilles International-Connecticut Chapter, one of 32 US Chapters of the not-for-profit Achilles International, Inc.  Membership in Achilles Connecticut is free, and the Chapter covers race registration and travel expenses for 55 (and counting) athletes and their team of trained guides in mainstream road races of all distances.

Team Achilles Connecticut members participate in 12 races throughout Connecticut, including the Ion Bank Cheshire Half Marathon & 5K, the Faxon Law New Haven Road Race, and the Eversource Hartford Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K.  Athletes who qualify also compete in the Boston Marathon and TCS New York City Marathons, among other out-of-state events of all distances.
