Glastonbury, CT – September 18, 2019 – The non-profit Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF), producers of 30+ race events throughout southern New England, is pleased to recognize Stop & Shop as the presenting sponsor of the HMF FitKids youth running platform. In addition, the neighborhood grocer, which operates over 400 stores throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey, will provide in-store recognition and on-site support of the 2019 Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon and select HMF Events throughout the region.
The HMF FitKids platform encompasses the HMF FitKids Runs, the HMF FitKids Relay Racers and the HMF FitKids in School program. The 6-week school-based training program is provided for free to participating schools and capped off with a “Medal Day” event celebrating students’ accomplishments to complete their 13 or 26 mile goal. Outside of that program, HMF FitKids Runs coincide with about 20 HMF Events through the year and offer children 2-11 years old an opportunity to be introduced to the rewards of running while their families are participating in one of the Foundation’s 5K, 10K or half marathon events. Kids run a ¼ mile, ½ mile or 1 mile race and earn a medal and race swag upon completion. The Relay Racers program, specific to the Eversource Hartford Marathon, allows teachers or coaches to get a student relay team together to support them through the full or half marathon.
“It’s important to us that we encourage future generations of runners and provide an opportunity for them to experience the rewards of the sport we love. We’re grateful for the support from Stop & Shop to help keep the HMF FitKids platform running strong,” said Beth Shluger, Hartford Marathon Foundation CEO and founder. “Stop & Shop is a staple in the region and a natural partner to support healthy communities through nutrition education and cross-promotion of healthy choices for our race participants.”
Stop & Shop locations in the greater Hartford region will host in-store samplings and provide materials for customers on the Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon on October 4, 5 and 6, in advance of the 26th running of the event on Saturday, October 12, 2019. Stop & Shop will also provide healthy snacks and nutrition information on site at the marathon and at additional races through the year. The grocer also plans to support food donation collections at events to benefit its longtime food bank partner Foodshare in support of the Foundation’s long-running HMF Can donation drive efforts.
“To be able to support healthy lifestyles for Hartford-area youth and drive donations for local hunger relief organizations is a win-win,” said Rudy DiPietro, VP Sales and Operations, Stop & Shop. “We’re so proud to be aligned with the Hartford Marathon Foundation and to help in their efforts to get kids excited about fitness and about making healthy food choices.”
