Capital Foundation Welcomes Author Jaquira Díaz for Hispanic Heritage Month

Jaquira Díaz, a Whiting Award-winning author and nationally recognized voice in contemporary memoir, will visit Hartford to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Wadsworth Atheneum.

The event will begin with a reception, where Díaz will sign copies of her work, followed by a lecture reflecting on her life growing up in housing projects in Puerto Rico and Miami Beach.

Díaz is the author of the memoir Ordinary Girls, winner of a Whiting Award in Nonfiction and a Florida Book Awards Gold Medal, and a finalist for the 2020 Lambda Literary Awards. The book was also named one of Time Magazine's most anticipated books of 2019 and one of Good Housekeeping's 50 best books of the year. In it, Díaz writes about family, identity, and resilience, tracing her path from a childhood marked by hardship and upheaval toward hope and self-discovery.

Proceeds from the event support student scholarships and programming at CT State Capital.
