Hartford Public Library to Host Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for Downtown Library

Hartford Public Library (HPL) invites the community to a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, June 1, at 11:00 a.m. at its Downtown Library, 500 Main Street. The event will kick off a weeklong celebration marking the Downtown Library’s full reopening.

The Downtown Library experienced a devastating flood in December 2022 and was closed for nearly two years while repairs and restorations were completed. The Library reopened its Main Street doors in November 2024 for the first time since the flood, and in January 2025, reopened its Children’s Department and YOUmedia spaces.

Now, the Downtown Library will unveil the remaining fully restored spaces, including The American Place & Social Innovation Center, Business Resource Center, Hartford History Center, HPL Studios, and HPL Hall. From entrepreneurship and workforce development to arts and culture and media production, the reimagined Library creates new opportunities for all and redefines itself as a civic and cultural hub featuring expanded community gathering spaces.

“We are excited to fully welcome the community back to the Downtown Library, designed to serve as a vibrant civic and cultural hub for Hartford for generations to come,” said HPL President and CEO Bridget E. Quinn.

Opening Week, taking place June 1–6, will feature live performances, family-friendly activities, technology demonstrations, arts programming and exhibitions, community conversations, small business programming, the third annual Books & Brews, and more!

HPL is grateful to the many donors, partners, organizations, and community members who helped make this transformation possible.
