Massive Cyclotron Machine Installed for New Connecticut Proton Therapy Center
Hartford HealthCare, Yale New Haven Health System, and Proton International hosted an exciting media event to mark the arrival and installation of state-of-the-art equipment at the new Connecticut Proton Therapy Center in Wallingford.
S2C2 Cyclotron is a massive machine weighing about 55 metric tons. Inside, protons are accelerated to nearly 60% the speed of light, powerful enough that they could reach the moon in just two seconds. The machine’s size is equally impressive; this machine is large enough to hold about 30,000 hardcover books or nearly 100,000 apples.
Important Background info:
This advanced technology will play a key role in expanding access to leading-edge proton therapy, offering more precise and effective cancer treatment.
Set to open in 2026, the 25,000-square-foot Center is the first-of-its-kind in the state and will offer advanced proton therapy, a highly targeted form of radiation treatment that uses proton beams instead of traditional X-rays to treat cancer. This innovative technology allows for more precise delivery of radiation, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Currently available at only a handful of locations across the Northeast, proton therapy represents a major advancement in cancer care.
The new Connecticut Proton Therapy Center will not only transform how cancer treatment is delivered across the state but also position Connecticut as a national leader and world-class destination for leading-edge cancer treatment.
