St. Vincent’s Medical Center and City of Bridgeport Team up for free E-Bike Helmet Giveaway

Hartford HealthCare’s St. Vincent’s Medical Center and the City of Bridgeport announces a new community initiative focused on saving lives, preventing injuries and promoting e-bike safety throughout Greater Bridgeport.

As e-bikes become an increasingly popular way for residents to travel, St. Vincent’s is committed to protecting riders, whether it’s a child 8 years or older heading to school or an adult commuting to work. Injuries from e-bikes and scooters are a growing concern nationwide, and especially here in Connecticut.

To save lives and prevent injuries, free e-bike rated helmets will be distributed this Saturday, October 10th, from 2 pm to 4 pm at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in partnership with the City of Bridgeport, while supplies last. The free giveaway of at least 150 helmets is made possible by a St. Vincent’s Philanthropy Department generous donor.

The helmets are designed for maximum protection, specifically rated for the higher speeds of e-bikes and scooters. Each helmet includes a high-intensity rear light to help ensure riders are visible day or night with reflective stickers in both English and Spanish, reinforcing safety message for every member of the community.

E-bike injuries are on the rise, with some Level One trauma centers reporting a 400% increase according to the American College of Surgeons Bulletin. Recent 2024 data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission shows nearly 60,000 e-bike-related injuries are treated in emergency rooms, with about 30% occurring at intersections and involving a car.
