Connecticut Insurance Department Launches Climate Risk Mapping Tool
Overview: The Connecticut Insurance Department has launched a free, easy-to-use online mapping and risk-rating tool on September 30th to help Connecticut residents assess the climate-related risks to their specific properties.
This interactive tool is powered by First Street Foundation and provides property-level climate risk data that goes beyond traditional FEMA flood maps. It is accessible to everyone through the Department’s Flood Insurance Information Center.
Highlights
Connecticut residents can enter their address in the tool and immediately understand their exposure to climate-related risks through visual maps and risk-rating reports.
This property level mapping tool is a marked improvement to the static FEMA flood maps that currently exists for residents.
This need for improved risk assessment for homeowners and business arose from the catastrophic flooding in parts of Western Connecticut last year.
Most of the people affected did not have flood insurance because they didn’t think they were at risk. But nearly half of the damage in the U.S. from flooding occurs outside designated flood zones.
The Insurance Department is providing the online tool in partnership with First Street, a leading provider of physical climate risk analytics.
